Andrzejki is a tradition that has been known in Poland for years. They are loved by children, especially because of the fortune-telling. They are also celebrated by adults, having the opportunity to socialize at the end of November. Although it is a long-standing tradition, over time we celebrate it differently than we used to. It's worth remembering the old games for this special evening. Some of the rituals of St. Andrew's Day are great fun for younger people, while some games are ideal for older people. There is certainly a lot to choose from as you prepare for an Andrews night.
St. Andrew's Day every year falls on the night before Andrew's name day. So this year's Andrews night is also the one from November 29 to 30. This time it will be from Friday to Saturday. The 2024 calendar turns out to be favorable to people who feel like partying late into the night on Andrew's night, because on Saturday there is a better chance of getting a good night's sleep afterwards.
There is no clear answer as to where the tradition of St. Andrew's night came from. However, it is known that in Poland we have been celebrating this night since the 17th century, but in central and eastern Europe it was celebrated as early as the Middle Ages. It was customary for young girls on St. Andrew's Day to try to foretell their future, particularly that of marriage. It may be significant that St. Andrew's Day closes the church year. december 1 marks the beginning of Advent, which for believers is a time of reflection and anticipation, and St. Andrew's night may have been the last opportunity to party before Christmas. It is worth mentioning that once upon a time, a week earlier than St. Andrew's Day, Catharines was celebrated. These, for a change, were celebrated more by young men. It could be said that it was the male equivalent of St. Andrews. Nowadays, Catharines are basically gone and everyone celebrates together on the night of November 29-30.
Nowadays, St. Andrew's Day is a great opportunity for social gatherings, both intimate and larger ones. St. Andrew's parties are organized in homes, but also in restaurants, banquet halls and ballrooms. It is also a great opportunity to go out for two or with a larger group of friends. Many hotels in Poland have prepared special offers for the St. Andrew's weekend. It's also a wonderful opportunity for families to spend the evening with their children on traditional games. The night from November 29 to 30 is associated with fortune-telling, so no matter what form of spending it you choose, it's worth remembering some of them.
St. Andrew's divination is a variety of games designed to foretell the future. One of the more popular is the arranging of shoes in a row toward the door by several people taking turns until one of the shoes crosses the threshold. The person to whom the shoe belonged first will stand on the wedding cake. Many of the games of St. Andrew's Day are various divinations using water and floating objects. For example, there is a version with nut shells, into which a card with the names of people is inserted. The shells, which will float in their direction placed on the water, suggest that these people will be in a relationship with each other. In turn, the couple in this way can further their future together or part ways. Similarly, one can divine by letting go of signed ships made of paper or even colored straws. A very popular game is divination with apple peelings. The fruit is peeled in such a way that a long strip is formed from the peel. Children should do this under parental supervision, using a safe peeler. The resulting peel should be thrown behind and check what shape it has formed on the floor. If it resembles a letter, it is the first letter of the future spouse of the person who made the fortune. There are also well-known games involving writing names on a piece of paper and piercing it with a needle. The pierced name indicated the future chosen one.
One of the most popular fortune tellers on St. Andrew's Day is the pouring of wax. There probably isn't anyone in Poland who hasn't at least heard of this game, and certainly most have divined in this way as a child. Who hasn't tried to guess their future from the shadow on the wall? However, if someone doesn't remember how it was done, it's worth remembering. This is a game that children should not try without adult supervision. First, wax must be melted in a saucepan. Then you need to pour it through the keyhole into a bowl of cold water. The wax will solidify forming an irregular shape. You should take it out of the water and, using, for example, a lit candle or simply a lamp, cast the shadow of this shape on the wall. What appears symbolizes the future. Of course, the interpretation of what we see and predict depends on our imagination. However, it is accepted that, for example, a heart means happiness in love, a star means success, and a snake tells us to watch out for wicked people. However, it is worth looking at it with a sense of humor and reaching for our own associations. The fortune telling is just fun!
