What is a midi dress?
Midi skirt or dress midi reach at least past the knee, no further than mid-calf. Shorter skirts and dresses are mini, while longer ones are maxi length.
The difficult history of midi length - the beginnings
The over-the-knee length has caught on in the trends of recent years. It is worn by both young and more mature women. It is a little less popular in summer, in autumn it celebrates its triumphs. Few people know that this length of women's attire has its own rich and eventful history.
First midi dresses were an expression of emancipation. They began to be popular in the 1920s, which was quite shocking at the time, due to the fact that it was the first time in history that women of all states showed a leg higher than the ankle.
Dresses shorter than to the ground, as late as the beginning of the 20th century, were allowed only for working women due to greater comfort in performing duties.
At a time when the aristocracy of the world began to mix more with the lower classes, noblewomen also began to wear ankle-length dresses.
It was not until the 1920s that the previously necessary corsets were removed and the midi dress it conquered the whole world, especially among younger women. At that time it was worn in a loose cut with a lowered waist, necessarily with a long string of pearls. During the war, this length of dress was popular in other guises - for example, in the form of fitted skirts.
Eventually, the prevalence of this length of knee-length dresses and skirts was determined by Christian Dior's collection released after World War II called "New Look". It spread the fashion for fitted jackets and flared skirts.
In the 1950s and early 1960s, elegant ladies wore midi length dresses with a clearly defined waist.

Stores that, in the belief that the trend toward midi dresses will take off, they had a lot of this type of merchandise in stock, they lost a huge amount of money.
The battle of the midi length against the mini lasted a good decade. In the 1970s, few women wore this length.
Midi dress - a flourish
Over time, more ladies have found that the dress behind the knee is very feminine. It was no longer necessary to expose the legs to look beautifully interesting.
